In Austria, the pilot action will take place in Vienna
In Vienna, public transport (PT) is mainly operated by the local transport organization Wiener Linien, as well as ÖBB (Austrian Railway Company running metropolitan and long-distance train connections).
As PT operator, Wiener Linien represents the biggest local player in this sector facing complex challenges relating to tram/metro/bus crew working hours. WL views itself as a holistic sustainable employer. With a workforce comprising around 9,000 employees (as of 2024) and around 50 workplace locations situated within the boundaries of Vienna, there exists substantial potential for CO2 reduction, should employees embrace sustainable modes of transportation. In 2019, the company mobility management "We are mobile - employee journeys in focus" was founded.
Corporate mobility management - with a focus on employee mobility - provides solutions aimed at optimizing the cost-effectiveness and resource efficiency of commuting to and from work, as well as internal business trips. The measures cover information and communication activities, as well as investments in infrastructure and the specific employee services offered by Wiener Linien, e.g., the purchase of company bicycles and the improvement of bicycle parking facilities, the issue of parking cards for private cars or communication activities and campaigns that encourage active mobility. The aim of all these initiatives is to enable people to make their daily journeys to work in the most resource-efficient way possible.
In Vienna, public transport starts and finishes operations each day at about 15 locations based around the city. These are metro or tram depots or bus garages.
Employees of Wiener Linien face difficulties traveling to/from work during nighttime hours, especially those residing outside the city boundaries e.g., in Lower Austria (the province surrounding Vienna). Indeed, around 35 % of Wiener Linien employees reside outside of city boundaries in the regions of Lower Austria, Burgenland or even further away in Styria.
